Merc was born in 1967 in the centre of fashionable Carnaby Street, only metres away from where the flagship store is located today. It was started by a young Mr Javid Alavi.
“During the 1960’s, Britain saw an explosion of many bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who flocked to the Mecca of Fashion, Carnaby St. Colour television brought the UK Top of the Pops and Carnaby Street became the epicentre of a new ground breaking fashion scene. It attracted the young and the sophisticated. We became an important player in the tradition of British tailoring and catered for the discerning shopper by focusing on clean cut core style and trend setting fashion items.”
Over more than 40 years, Merc has developed into an international symbol of classic British clothing. It stands as a true British company that has survived five decades of trading and still remains privately owned today.
Javid remains the Chairman of the Merc Group of Companies and still has a very active role in the running of Merc. He has seen it grow to a point where it currently trades in 45 countries worldwide expanding beyond fashion into other commercial activities. Javid attributes Merc’s success to its loyal customer base and its flagship store which has become a destination for many year after year.
Today the brand continues to expand and ‘Merc’ is now recognised worldwide as a truly global and iconic British brand, steeped in over 40 years of heritage.
Here at Merc we have a philosophy that states;
‘Style never fades. The Merc look is sleek, sharp and stylish. Constantly changing but unmistakably Merc.’
The Merc family is comprised of an eclectic mix of long standing staff members. It’s a fun place to work and the fact it’s privately owned means you won’t find any Corporate slaves!
