The Scottish Shipping Benevolent Association (SSBA) has been providing financial support to families in need for over 100 years.
From our charities beginning to this present day, the maritime sector in Scotland recognises there is a need to financially support our loyal workforce in times of need. Whilst there are many worthwhile charities aimed at seafarers, the SSBA is the only charity focused specifically at people who have worked in a shore-side maritime role within Scotland.
Over the years the SSBA has supported many people who have, at some point in their lives, been unable to support themselves or their families in times of need, whether through death, illness, redundancy, poverty, or where they are just unable to financially support their own or dependent's ambitions for training and advancement. Hardship funding may be granted to members of the SSBA and their dependants, or indirectly through institutions such as maritime colleges and other related charities.
The lifetime membership costs £25 and although there is an element of ‘insurance’ in this for your own future, it should also be seen as a charitable donation. Any person who has or is currently working in a shore-based role within any sector of the Scottish maritime community can join our cause.
