Carey Group was founded in 1951 by Brian Carey, who joined Larry Kelly's accounting practice in Ingham. Brian's sons, John and Robert, joined later, and the firm became BJ Carey and Company. In 1988, Joe Carey, Brian's son, also joined the family business.
In 2002, the Townsville Office opened, offering Financial Planning and SMSF Administration. From 2006 onwards, the firm traded as Carey Accountants, Carey Financial, and Strategic SMSF.
In 2016, the firm restructured as the Carey Group, providing Accounting, Audit, Financial Planning, SMSF, and Business Services. In 2017, Shirvington Partners was acquired, expanding the firm's presence in Northern Queensland.
The newly renovated Townsville office, which serves as the central point of the Carey Group, opened in 2019. Matt Thomson joined as CEO & Managing Partner that year.
In 2021, the company celebrated its 70th year in business. Carey Thomson Consulting was established, and the new Brisbane office opened. Two mergers took place in 2021: one with Indigo Financial Services, integrating their staff with the financial planning team in the Townsville office, and another with Barrier Reef Accounting, expanding their presence in Far North Queensland.
The current firm upholds the family business tradition while providing modern expertise and technical infrastructure in accounting and financial services. They prioritise personalised service and advice for their diverse client base.
