Based in Arlington, Texas, American Mensa is an organization open to anyone who scores in the top 2 percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. In addition to interacting online, members attend local and national events, join special interest groups that range from astronomy to yoga, and help out in their communities. The organization has more than 50,000 members in the United States and its protectorates.
Mensa's purposes are:
1) to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity;
2) to encourage research into the nature, characteristics, and uses of intelligence; and
3) to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members.
