Why We Need Bees: Over one third of the Global food production is reliant on bees. 84% of European crop species require insect pollination. Declining bees = decline in pollination = less food produced =price rises in food. They are a vital part of our ecosystem. A single honey bee can visit over 2000 flowers in a single day – a strong hive can have up to 50,000 bees.... that's a lot of pollination! Our aim is to counter the current alarming decline of the native bee population by pursuing a nationwide breeding initiative. We are the UK’s first and only nation-wide queen rearing and colony expanding project. Through either individual or corporate membership programs, we aim to rapidly increase the amount of bees that are cared for by humans. We are creating new colonies through our breeding initiative - whilst being pro-active to any dangers. All our hives are monitored and maintained regularly. Our network of bee keepers report back though an app to our HQ. The information is then recorded and processed daily. This gives us a clear understanding and report of the current situation of the colonies under our projects management system. This in turn provides us with full traceability and an up to date maintenance log. By doing so we can react to any problems, rear queens effectively, re-queen the failing colonies and of course keep an eye on numbers to see how successful we are in making a positive difference to the UK’s bee population. Honey bee colonies ( if deemed strong enough) could potentially be 'split' 5 times a year – making 5 new colonies and 5 new queens. After allowing the colony to grow strong they could then be split again. New hives established, new colonies established, humans caring for the hives and keeping alert for pests / disease and problems, winter feeding etc… we might just reverse the decline and start to bolster the numbers.. and you can be part of it!
