CBRu is the national governing body for rugby in Brazil. Founded in 1972 as the Brazilian Rugby Association (ABR), the organization reformulated its statute in 2010 and implemented a professional management model based on corporate governance, changing its name to CBRu - Brazilian Rugby Union.
Rugby is one of the most popular sports in the world, with 6.6 million registered players and present in more than 120 countries. In Brazil, more than 130 000 followers, over 300 sporting clubs and 60 000 practitioners. All this context, added to the return of the sport to the Olympic program in 2016, made World Rugby elect Brazil as a strategic priority for investment.
CBRu promotes the formation of Brazil´s national rugby teams from both modalities of the sport: Sevens and XV. Additionally, CBRu organizes nationwide clubs competitions, such as Super 8, Taça Tupi and the Rugby Sevens Circuit. Furthermore, the Brazilian Rugby Union leads the professional background for refereeing, technical and physical preparation area, and promotes the development of sport by encouraging the practice of Rugby in schools and social projects. Strong national teams, high level competitions and the popularization of Rugby are our key goals, promoting the sport all over Brazil.
