One third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while more than 13.8 million people are hungry. FoodBank SA is the catalyst that connects a world of excess to a world of need.
Started in 2009, FoodBank SA was established on the premise that there is a significant amount of food waste that can be harnessed to address the problem of food insecurity. We have a national network of warehouses and logistics infrastructure across the county, and are well suited to manage projects on a national scale.
In partnership with all the major food retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers, our mandate is to collect edible surplus food and non-food products, for redistribution to verified NPOs (BO’s) that offer invaluable services in the areas of child care, youth empowerment, abused women, the disabled, frail care etc. in disadvantaged communities across SA.
Our Mission
To reduce hunger in South Africa by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food, and making it available to those who need it.
Why FoodBanking Works
Although only 6 years in existence, FoodBank SA has become an international leader, by implementing innovative programs such as the Social Supermarket, Virtual FoodBanking and web-bases solutions, that FoodBanks globally follow. Here are some reasons why foodbanking works:
> All the food is free, making foodbanking a cost effective solution to the problem of hunger.
> The cost per meal is only R1,08, and every R1 donated translates to R7,70 worth of food value per person.
> The total value of the products distributed to our BO’s is R97,000,000 a year.
> A donation of R400 will allow FoodBank SA to feed one person for a whole year.
> We have branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, PE and Rustenburg.
> FoodBank SA belongs to the Global Foodbanking network, an international umbrella body that promotes foodbanking and audits the work we do.
