Urbanspace was founded in the UK in 1972 as Urban Space Management. During its 40+ years of existence, the company developed well over 50 projects, revamped derelict city spaces, and created vibrant new places for community and commercial gathering. In 1993, Urbanspace made the leap across the pond and arrived in New York City, establishing NYC operations with the founding of the Grand Central Holiday Fair. That same year, Urbanspace introduced the iconic Union Square Holiday Market: the first of our outdoor retail markets in New York. With its compelling lineup of local makers, the pop up markets quickly became a destination for shopping and dining to both tourists and residents alike. From there, our pop up portfolio grew to include the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park, The Columbus Circle Holiday Market and our smash-hit seasonal food markets; such as Mad. Sq. Eats., Broadway Bites, and Urbanspace Garment District. In September of 2015, Urbanspace unveiled its first brick-and-mortar food hall: Urbanspace Vanderbilt, which features over 20 chef-driven concepts inside of the landmarked Helmsley Building by Grand Central. Following the success of Vanderbilt, Urbanspace has opened year-round locations in Times Square, the historic General Electric Building on Lexington Avenue, and in the AXA Equitable Center on W52nd Street. In 2022, Urbanspace continued to grow with the launch of Urbanspace Pearl in the Financial District, Urbanspace Union Square, and (in partnership with Singaporean Hawker Centre Curator, KF Seetoh) Urban Hawker. Urban Hawker is the first of it’s kind in New York City, recreating an authentic Hawker Centre by bringing 11 Singaporean vendors to America to serve their iconic dishes. The company is poised as the industry leader in food halls and creative public place making.
