Founded in 1987, the Poverello Center, Inc. (www.poverello.org) provides nutritious food, services and basic living essentials with the highest degree of understanding, respect and love for individuals living with critical and chronic Illnesses including HIV, in South Florida. Dedicated staff and volunteers meet the nutritional needs of its clients through the distribution of free groceries, household items,and clothing through its food pantry and thrift store. Poverello clients also have access to a full-service gym (Friends Fitness Center) and alternative therapies such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and haircuts at no cost thanks to generous supporters and volunteer providers.
The Poverello Center, Inc. operates mainly though the selfless giving of hundreds of volunteers. These individuals assist in the food pantry by writing food orders for clients, packaging grocery bags and boxes. What's in a bag? Volunteers at Poverello's thrift store assist in the sorting room preparing donated items for the sales floor, as well as within the store with retail, display and sales activities. Another key volunteer opportunity is on the event and marketing committee assisting in the planning and implementation of community-wide fundraising and awareness events. Volunteers are also needed at Poverello's Friends Fitness Center, providing free health and wellness services free of charge to the HIV community for more than a decade.
