Jesuit Worldwide Learning - Higher Education at the Margins (JWL) provides equitable high quality tertiary learning to people and communities at the margins of societies - be it through poverty, location, lack of opportunity, conflict or forced displacement – so all can contribute their knowledge and voices to the global community of learners and together foster hope to create a more peaceful and humane world.
JWL is a collaborative global partnership comprised of organizations, institutions, companies, and above all, people, to provide tertiary education to those who would otherwise not have access to higher learning opportunities. It draws on the rich and centuries long Jesuit tradition of higher education and through a blended on-site and on-line approach mobilizes the resources of Jesuit and other worldwide networks of educational institutions.
The name of Jesuit Worldwide Learning is its mission, to foster worldwide learning as a humble contribution to solve the global issues which can only be addressed in a joined global thinking. People at the margins and the poor are the ones who bear the brunt when things go terribly wrong and end up in conflicts and forced displacement. They have the greatest interest to transform their reality. JWL wants them to be connected, learn and think together, and contribute their knowledge. Its mission: “Learning Together to Transform the World”.
As a work of the Society of Jesus, JWL is a continuation of the Ignatian heritage and of the distinctive tradition of Jesuit education. This means that St. Ignatius inspires and gives shape to how JWL educates, in a way that seeks God in all things, promotes discernment and Magis, and engages the world through a careful analysis of context, in dialogue with experience, evaluated through reflection, for the sake of action, and with openness, always, to evaluation. The JWL courses follow this tradition of humanities and pedagogical method - the Ignatian pedagogy. By applying these, the learning becomes a transformative experience which allows the learner and learning community to take action in full human freedom and to transform their reality.
JWL hopes that through this Ignatian learning experience, students are being formed in men and women for others, who serve their communities and become leaders with high responsibility and values.
