The Wanicare Foundation is a Dutch non-profit organization that operationalizes the Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center with hands-on management and financial funding. Wanicare was founded in 2009 by Willemijn Eggen as professional rescue centers are critically important for the well-being of many animals and the conservation of wildlife. In Cikananga animals like orangutans, bears, leopards, and many bird species find a (temporary) home as they come from the illegal trade or lost their habitat due to human activity. In 2008 Willemijn arrived at Cikananga and she was confronted with a center that could not handle the loss of the sole funder. After establishing Wanicare the rescue center has become again organized and even more professional. With a small budget, hard work, and full determination the Cikananga team has made a great difference in animal welfare in the center and the prospects for the animals. After rebuilding the center Wanicare also started running programs for the protection of habitats and release programs for the (critically) endangered animals such as Silvery gibbons, raptors, and Javan leopards. Wanicare is closely involved in all activities at the rescue center and Willemijn supports the rescue activities and supervises all medical activities in Cikananga together with Inge Tielen as Conservation Manager. In Cikananga we take care of over 450 rescued wild animals, coordinate rescue and release operations, run a volunteer & student program, develop conservation/release programs and build high-welfare enclosures. We offer professional medical care, and rehabilitation and strive to release all wild animals back into their natural habitat. Education is a central theme in our work as we involve local and international students in our work and lecture at local schools and universities.
