Our Vision:
Lifelong life-saving sanitation for all Indonesian villagers by 2027.
Same for the whole rural world by 2030.
How? Through the Safe Water Garden (SWG), the world's most cost-efficient sanitation system.
The Issue:
In tropical villages, wastewater from toilets is typically released untreated into the environment.
The result is a health tragedy: Worldwide, about 2000 children die every day as a result, 370 in Indonesia alone. Furthermore, developing countries suffer a huge economic and social toll.
Finally, it’s a global environment catastrophe: The release of organic waste leads to oxygen depletion in the world’s water systems, threatening fish stocks and coral reefs worldwide.
The Solution:
A combination of two well-known concepts in wastewater management, septic tanks and leach-fields (one set per household) has long been recognised as a viable solution. Using these concepts, UNICEF, Red Cross and others developed a practical and economical solution for Aceh’s villagers after the 2004 tsunami.
Inspired by their life-saving work, we have further optimized their solution and made it even cheaper and easier to build locally. Our optimized solution is called a “Safe Water Garden” (SWG). It features 3 main components: a septic tank, a leach field (the garden), and a pipe system connecting the parts.
