Sandman Studios was founded in 2016 as a creative-driven Chinese VR/AR animation technology company that focused on storytelling. Through the process of narrative creation with storytellers and technologists, from the fields of animation, game, drama and digital film special effect, Sandman is exploring opportunities for content narratology provided by the development of technology.
The first works Firekeeper (《烧火工》) produced by Sandman Studios was adapted from a short story by Liu CiXin (刘慈欣), a nine-time Galaxy Award (中国科幻银河奖) winner, and winner of of the science fiction’s most prestigious award, the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction Novel (2015 雨果奖最佳小说奖). Liu’s most influential work The Three-Body Problem (《三体》) is considered to be the best Chinese science fiction novel to date. Firekeeper is the first chinese full CG VR film.
Except producing full CG film, we are making real shot video and light-interaction game, designing training courses to build a crowd innovation platform. Through our adventure into the landscape of the imagination, we want to validate that: ‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’
