The Matthew of Bristol is a replica of the 15th century caravel that John Cabot sailed on an epic voyage from Bristol to Newfoundland in 1497. In 1997, the modern Matthew sailed across the Atlantic to mark the 500th anniversary of the original voyage.
Today, The Matthew is a much-loved part of Bristol’s maritime heritage with a busy schedule of public and private hire trips, film and festival work, corporate and celebration events. When we’re moored at our berth near M Shed, entrance is free – although as a registered charity, any donations in the collection box are very much appreciated!
The Matthew is largely run and maintained by our dedicated crew of volunteers. Between them, they know a vast amount about The Matthew and John Cabot, and Bristol's maritime history. Come along for a free history lesson, and maybe some slightly taller tales!
