The National Economic & Social Council advises the Taoiseach and Government on strategic policy issues relating to sustainable economic, social and environmental development in Ireland. It is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary year, which will culminate in a full-day, in-person conference in the Printworks, Dublin Castle, on 23rd November 2023.
Established in November 1973, NESC has published reports on a wide range of areas including general economic and social policy, industrial policy, agriculture and rural development, housing, education, public services, the welfare system, well-being, Ireland in the European Union, climate change and wind energy.
The members of NESC are appointed by the Taoiseach and comprise representatives from agricultural and farming organisations, business and employers’ organisations, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, community and voluntary organisations and environmental organisations, as well as Heads of Government departments and independent experts.
