Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d'Avignon is now one of the most important international events for contemporary performing arts. Every July, Avignon becomes a theater-city, transforming its architectural heritage into a variety of majestic and astonishing performance venues, welcoming tens of thousands of theater, dance, music and visual arts enthusiasts of all generations (over 140,000 admissions). Avignon is also an open-air forum, where festival-goers talk about the shows and share their experiences as spectators. For a whole month, everyone has access to contemporary, lively culture. Since September 2022, the director is Tiago Rodrigues.

The Festival d'Avignon means 78 years of universal thought at the service of cultural heritage and contemporary creation. 78 years of placing art in the perspective of the reality of the society, 78 years of aesthetic and political projects that observe the majors metamorphoses of the performing arts and the complexity of mankind. From September 2022, Tiago Rodrigues is director of the Festival d'Avignon.
