Company Details
The Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta is one of the oldest and most respected winemaking families of Italy with its historical estate in Piedmont. The history of the Monferrato area in Piedmont and that of Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, a family whose origins date back to before the eleventh century, are very intricately linked. For centuries, the Incisa family has owned vineyards and produced its own wine, an activity most likely started by the Benedictine monks, who were given in the Medieval times the right to plant vines in the hills of the family estate in Rocchetta Tanaro. You can still see traces of the presence of monks in the Sant’Emiliano votive chapel, which stands in one of the estate’s vineyard still owned by the family after so many centuries. In the nineteenth century, the Marchese Leopoldo Incisa (1792-1871), a member of the Royal Academy of Agriculture in Turin, made significant contributions to research and knowledge in the fields of enology and grape varieties of that period. The legendary Sassicaia was created by another member of the family, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a true visionary. He married the Countess Clarice della Gherardesca and moved from Piemonte to Bolgheri in Tuscany. With the winemaking heritage of his family in Piedmont and truly innovative ideas, Mario created a new style of wine - Sassicaia- the first "Super Tuscan" red wine produced by Tenuta San Guido that, to this day, remains the benchmark for its category. Since then, the Marchesi Incisa family produces wines within two separately owned estates: the historical family estate in Rocchetta Tanaro in Piedmont and the estate in Bolgheri in Tuscany. Cantine dei Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta is the estate in Piedmont. The company vision is to share a greater cultural perspective of Piedmont through terroir-driven wines and to produce top quality wines achieving balance, harmony and complexity that can only come from experience, dedication and passion.
