Emirates RDF is the first of its kind waste-to-fuel facility treatment plant in the GCC, based in Umm Al Quwain UAE. Aided by the vision of UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the support of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs of the UAE, Emirates RDF is a joint-venture of contractors BESIX and Tech Group along with Finland based waste refining solution provider, Griffin Refineries.
Inspired by the vision of His Excellency Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid, to reduce carbon emission by a quarter by 2030 as well as the objectives of the Paris Agreement, Emirates RDF is committed to constructively contributing to UAE’s national objective through focused and sustainable growth in producing high-quality RDF primarily catering to the cement kilns in the country.
Eliminated or discarded materials and substances from homes, schools, and businesses, more commonly known as Municipal Solid Waste, is often dumped in landfills. However, a cutting-edge and eco-friendly alternative to this is recycling and converting this waste to a clean fuel source. Selected waste and by-products with recoverable calorific value can be used as fuels in a cement kiln, replacing a portion of conventional fossil fuels.
The Emirates RDF facility will receive 1,000 tonnes of household waste per day from approximately 550,000 residents living in Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. The waste will then be converted in to alternative energy source called Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), which will be used in cement factories as an important fuel, thereby partially replacing the traditional use of gas or coal, and simultaneously resulting in a diversion of approximately 90% of household waste from the landfill.
Emirates RDF contributes to the UAE’s strategic objective of landfill diversion of at least 75 per cent by 2021 and it helps cement plants in decreasing their use of fossil fuels.
