Located in the heart of Christchurch, the Arts Centre is New Zealand’s largest collection of Category 1 heritage buildings. Held in trust for the people of Canterbury and its visitors, the Arts Centre has long been renowned as a place for arts, culture, education and creativity. With its post-earthquake restoration now past the half-way mark, it is reclaiming its place once again in the cultural landscape of Christchurch. As well as arts-related activities, visitors can enjoy shopping, eating, art galleries, education, events or just simply spend time in the stunning public spaces. There is an growing number of reasons to pay the Arts Centre a visit. In addition, five venues are for hire and enquiries are being taken from people interested in leasing space. While a significant amount of the restoration has been paid for, there’s still a substantial shortfall in funds and the Arts Centre is actively fundraising in order to complete the project. The $290m restoration programme is immaculately restoring the heritage features of these unique Gothic Revival buildings, while fitting them out with the latest modern infrastructure. Opportunities are being created for the community to share in progress, be part of events and activities, and to help shape the future of the Arts Centre.
