The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey is a small, private graduate school located in Monterey, California. The Institute’s master’s degree programs will prepare you to grapple with and find solutions for tomorrow’s global challenges, from protecting our environment for the next generation, to promoting sustainable development, building social enterprises, advancing peace and security, and bridging cross-cultural understanding.
Language and intercultural communication play a central role in every student’s experience at MIIS. Students at the Institute represent more than 40 countries and 30 native languages. About a third of our students are international, and 28% of U.S. students are multicultural. The Institute offers nine languages of study—Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish—and language and intercultural communication skills are emphasized in each of our degree programs.
Our faculty are both top experts and leading practitioners in their fields, and our 8:1 student-faculty ratio ensures they are available to help you pursue your goals both inside and outside the classroom.
Over 90% of our students have worked, studied, or lived abroad before coming to MIIS, and many go abroad again after enrolling. Through one of our practica, internships, or professional development programs, you’ll have the opportunity to spend spring break, winter term, summer break, or an entire semester abroad or in the U.S. getting the work experience you need to launch your international career.
More than 90% of our graduates are employed in their field within six months of graduation across the globe in at least 25 different countries. At least 64% of our alumni go on to use their language of study in professional settings.
Merit scholarships and summer language scholarships are available for both U.S. and international students! Learn more at go.miis.edu/scholarships
