NutraMaize is an Indiana based AgBioScience company commercializing a more nutritious, better tasting, variety of non-GMO corn. NutraMaize's proprietary corn variety possesses a deep orange color, which is produced by its high carotenoid content. Carotenoids are a family of nutrients with a number of critical functions in the human body including serving as anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and providing pro-vitamin A.
NutraMaize is launching a line of milled products (Grits, Polenta, Corn Meal) that will be sold to foodservice and consumers under the brand “Professor Torbert’s Orange Corn” which pays homage to its Co-Founder, Dr. Torbert Rocheford who developed NutraMaize's orange corn variety at Purdue University as part of an ongoing humanitarian effort to relieve global vitamin A deficiencies.
NutraMaize is a seed stage company that has received $425,000 in non-dilutive funding through a combination of an NSF STTR, USDA SBIR and state matching funds. This funding is enabling NutraMaize to significantly advance its R&D efforts to prepare its orange corn for large scale applications in the food ingredient and poultry feed markets (providing enhanced color to egg yolks). Compared to yellow corn, NutraMaize's orange corn has significantly higher levels of the carotenoids Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which are in increasing demand due to their critical role in protecting eye health.
