We are the government department responsible for public registers of land, property and other legal documents.
Our organisation has its roots in seventeenth century Edinburgh when the General Register of Sasines, the world’s oldest national land register, began to record ownership officially for the first time.
We now look after 21 public registers, among them the Land Register of Scotland, the Crofting Register, the Scottish Landlord Register and the Register of Community Interests in Land.
We are headed by the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland who is accountable to the Scottish Parliament.
As a non-ministerial department of the Scottish government, we raise our own funds by charging fees for our services.
We rely on our skilled and talented people to move our organisation forward. We employ nearly 1,000 staff, who are passionate about providing an effective service for the people of Scotland, in a range of roles across our Glasgow and Edinburgh offices.
