VisLab is an Italian company working on computer vision and environmental perception for vehicular applications.
It was founded in the early 90s as a research laboratory of University of Parma, Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione. It started its activities in 1990, with its involvement within the Eureka PROMETHEUS Project. Since then the research group focused on vehicular applications.
VisLab, directed by Alberto Broggi, undertakes basic and applied research, including the perception of the surrounding environment in vehicular applications using cameras and fusion with other sensors. Its researchers contribute to fields such as artificial vision, image processing, machine learning, neural networks, robotics, and sensor fusion.
In 2009, eleven VisLab researchers started a spinoff company, named VisLab S.r.l., to commercialize the results of their main researches.
In 2015, VisLab was acquired by Silicon Valley company Ambarella Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA), a leading developer of low-power, high-definition (HD) and Ultra HD video compression, image processing, and computer vision solutions. The company’s products are used in a variety of IP security, sports, wearable, drone, and automotive video cameras.
After the acquisition of VisLab by Ambarella Inc., on March 28, 2018, Ambarella announced its fully autonomous EVA (Embedded Vehicle Autonomy) vehicle on Silicon Valley roads to industry analysts and customers. EVA has been trained to deal with the various traffic scenarios presented by Silicon Valley’s challenging urban environment. The fully autonomous car combines software and algorithms based on VisLab’s 20+ years of autonomous vehicle research with Ambarella’s low-power CV1 embedded computer vision processors based on its CVflow architecture.
