Our mission is simple; give as many people as possible access to healthy, sustainable food that's locally produced and available year round. But we face challenges. Our climate is changing. Our society is changing with more and more of us are becoming urban dwellers. Even the economics of our food is changing. The only thing that isn't changing is our expectation that food should be healthy and taste great. So in this ever changing world, we knew that in order to achieve our mission, the farm had to change, not our food.
At Waterwheel Farms, we use the millennia old technique of water-based farming known as aquaponics and bring it indoors. Aquaponics is a form of farming where fish, plants, and a natural growing process co-exist in a mutually beneficial environment without the use of soil.
We are able to grow local food continuously year round regardless of whether it's an urban neighbourhood or an isolated community in northern Canada.
