This class is responsible for managing a significant amount of actual funds from the Miami University Endowment. The students act as Equity Analysts and are placed on one of 11 Sector Teams, through which they are responsible for allocating the fund's assets into various investment vehicles such as Sector ETFs, individual stocks, options etc. Students make all decisions involving trading and risk and can take on a role in managing the business side of the Fund as well (financial modeling, sales/marketing, website development, etc.). There is also an Executive Board for the class that students can participate in for leadership opportunities.
FIN 401 is a pre-requisite for FIN 481. There is also an application process to be admitted to the Fund. There are a limited number of seats for the class each semester (about 30) and demonstrated interest through either the Cleveland Research Stock Pitch Competition, the William Blair Investment Bank Competition or the CFA Research Challenge is strongly considered (but not required). Summer internships or career aspirations in the financial market field are also strongly considered along with grades.
