Initiatives in Design was established in 1984 as a partnership, becoming a limited company in 2007 trading as IID Architects. The practice is led by Directors Simon Tupper, Richard Matthews, Nick Rich, Gareth Box and David Brown.
Our studio is located in Richmond upon Thames and we currently employ 15 people including architects, architectural assistants, product designers and administrators.
Our concern has always been to provide a closely attentive and enthusiastic professional service to our clients and to design imaginative, innovative and well loved buildings. These qualities we believe have been valued throughout the practice’s life and have resulted in many long lasting working relationships.
From its beginnings as a general practice with an emphasis on social/community based project work, IID has developed into an educational specialist and has worked with over 50 schools in both independent and state sectors on projects ranging from £250,000 to £20 million in value. IID regularly work within the context of Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, Green Belt and other sensitive sites.
In addition to working on specific ‘one off’ projects we have extensive experience in master planning for school sites and working alongside clients in developing a holistic vision for their estate. As testament to the quality of what we design and our approach, our relationship with several schools extends beyond 20 years and the majority of our work comes from repeat commissions and recommendations.
In the 30 years since its inception, IID Architects have received many awards for its designs including the RICS 2010 London Award for Chessington Community College, a new build secondary school for Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. In 2016 The Philip Neri Library Atrium Development at The London Oratory School was shortlisted for the RIBA London Award and in 2017 IID was shortlisted for Education Architect of the Year (Nursery to 6th Form) by BD Magazine.
