The California Office of Legislative Counsel (OLC) is a nonpartisan public agency that provides confidential legal services to Members of the Legislature, the Governor, and other clients. OLC attorneys practice law in a collegial and intellectually challenging environment, drafting legislative proposals, and offering legal guidance on novel and complex legal matters, with respect to every subject area of California law. Their expertise as legislative lawyers directly contributes to the quality of state laws affecting nearly 38 million Californians.
The Office of Legislative Counsel also operates the Legislative Data Center, which develops and maintains a wide range of information technology solutions to support the operations of the Legislature and the OLC. The Legislative Data Center maintains databases on pending legislation and provisions of existing constitutional and statutory law, serving the information needs of both the Legislature and the general public. The systems maintained by the Legislative Data Center include complex statewide wide area, local area, and wireless networks connecting multiple servers, a mainframe computer, personal computers, and wireless devices; sophisticated storage management systems; and a customer support center.
