Founded in 1970, the Triangle Literacy Council (TLC) provides a range of services to adults, families, and youth who desire to acquire better skills in the English language. Our mission is to improve the lives of adults, youth, and families by teaching basic literacy and life skills for economic and social success. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, the TLC also offers Family Reading Workshops, financial literacy workshops, Life Skills classes, job skills programs, small group advanced conversation classes, and distance learning programs. All of these programs are free for residents. In 2017, a new Bull City YouthBuild program was added in Durham working with disconnected youth age 16 to 24 and out of school. Bull City YouthBuild teaches construction skills and basic adult high school education to provide participants with skills to be successful. Also in 2017, the Juvenile Literacy Center program was expanded into six new counties including Durham, Harnett, Person, Franklin, Vance and Granville. This resulted in an additional 1,050 students being provided with literacy instruction.
