Grounded in the belief that art is vital to the spirit, creativity and wholeness of human beings, the mission of Silvermine Arts Center is to cultivate, promote and encourage growth through the arts and to provide arts education and appreciation opportunities for the greater community. For nearly a century, Silvermine has provided art experiences that engage individuals of all ages, ethnicities, races, genders and income in creative expression and discovery through making and exhibiting art.
Our five-acre campus in New Canaan encompasses an award-winning School of Art with over 4,000 annual enrollments; a nationally renowned Guild of over 300 professional artists; a complex of five galleries, with free admission, presenting exhibitions by emerging and established contemporary artists; a permanent collection of original prints; and an outdoor Sculpture Walk that blends art and nature. Distinguished curators jury our landmark national exhibitions. Our Gallery programs engage the community in discussion-based lectures, panels, and events about art, its role in society, and issues relevant to our community. Our School of Art offers courses in a range of media unparalleled elsewhere in our region for adults and children—from ages 4 to 94—at all skill levels, with scholarships for talented youth.
Our educational mission extends beyond our campus. Our extensive Educational Outreach Programs provide curriculum-based arts education to 1,000 children in under-resourced Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford schools and nourishes the creative spirit of individuals with disabilities or mental health issues through collaborations with neighboring non-profits.
Silvermine provides an environment and atmosphere in which art and artists can develop and flourish. Students, visitors, instructors and artist members can work on projects, share ideas, explore new areas and grow in their understanding and immersion in the arts.
