City of Chelmsford Mencap is based near the centre of Chelmsford. About a dozen staff and tutors support and develop up to 100 people in mid-Essex with learning disabilities. Services and activities can be accessed from the age of 16.
Principal activities include:
- Outreach Academy, which provides lifelong learning to people aged 19+ who need extra support to learn and get the most out of life. It helps students to develop their social, work and life skills and to maximise health and independence. Staff and volunteers provide a supported environment that enables students to reach their potential. Sessions run weekdays throughout the year including school holidays at our centre in Mildmay Road.
- Gateway Club, which meets on Thursdays for adults aged 16+ with a learning disability. Activities include art, drama and dance as well as themed evenings, bowling trips and meals out.
- Gateway Juniors, which meets on Tuesdays for younger adults aged 16 to 25 with a learning disability. There is a varied programme of activities.
