SEED is an award-winning nonprofit and public benefits organization operating from Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats. We have a vision to roll out our Resilience Training nationally, and to replicate the Rocklands Urban Abundance Centre in Mitchells Plain as both a demonstration of sustainable enterprise development and as a campus for our training. Our work is rooted in the sustainable land design system of Permaculture.
In the first decade of our history, we pioneered schools environmental education by teaching permaculture and environmental awareness to primary school learners in South Africa. Our training manuals are available online to any school, learner or educator. Our model has been replicated in schools throughout South Africa.
Secondary school graduates who had been through SEED training requested tertiary education, skills training, and enterprise development. For the last 5 years we have been graduating 100 Seeding Futures graduates each year from our Seeding Futures resilience training course.
Our work addresses food security, climate adaptation, urban resilience, green economic development, and community solidarity and cohesion to address the polycrisis that face the people of Mitchells Plain and, indeed, all South Africans.
Through our training and social enterprises - we offer solutions to challenges like the need for dignified sustainable livelihoods, local food production, and community resilience.
