InterAct LifeLine addresses the opioid crisis and increasing rates of overdose deaths from fentanyl by leveraging technology to keep individuals connected to treatment, online communities, recovery and wellness education and support. LifeLine Connect takes data from fitness trackers and smart watches to detect potential overdose, alert others and send help to prevent overdose deaths.
The Problem
Over 100,000 people die from overdose each year, more than in the entire Vietnam and Gulf Wars combined with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, present in 80% of the overdose deaths. Fentanyl is deadly, 50 times more potent than heroin, hard to detect and present in almost every illegal street drug. Addiction is often treated as an acute vs. a chronic disease with treatment focused on addressing short-term detox and 30-day programs, but lacking strategies to manage the disease on an on-going basis. This strategy contributes to driving relapse rates as high as 85% in the first year following treatment.
Rural communities are on the frontline of the surge in synthetic opioid overdoses, including fentanyl and fentanyl-laced drug overdoses with deaths rising 376% in the past 10 years. The lack of treatment options in rural areas, the shame associated with the disease, lack of education and wellness strategies have ravaged the social structure of our rural societies.
