Canadian Authors is Canada’s first and longest-running national writers organization. Founded in 1921 by Stephen Leacock and other prominent authors of the day, we have evolved into a wide-reaching organization that is a unique blend of intimate local community and dynamic national network.
We are a membership-based organization for writers at all stages of their writing careers—aspiring, emerging, and professional—in every genre. With nine branches and twigs across the country and an active community of members-at-large, we serve our members by:
• Providing opportunities for professional development
• Promoting the fair and equitable treatment of writers
• Working in partnership with other relevant organizations
• Increasing awareness of Canada’s writing and publishing environment
Our programs help writers network, develop their skills, and promote their work. Local branch and twig activities include regular meetings and special events. Our CanWrite! conferences bring together writers, publishing professionals, and instructors for workshops, panel discussions, and writing time. Our webinars deliver timely professional development opportunities on the business and craft of writing. Canadian Authors’ Literary Awards honour authors whose books have achieved excellence without sacrificing popular appeal.
Canadian Authors also offers other members-only benefits:
• Access to members-only writing circles
• Reduced rates for CanWrite! conference registration, and special Canadian Authors’ publications
• Member bulletins with information on writing contests, events, and resources
• Access to insurance benefits through the Writers’ Coalition
• Opportunities to participate on branch and national committees
