Orion emerged when the founder purchased Pungguk Confectionery in 1956. Orion led Korea’s confectionery market from the beginning and soon launched the hit item called ‘Orion Caramel.’ Korea’s first localized drops called `Orion King Drops' were launched in December 1957 and its four flavors ? orange, pineapple, lemon, and strawberry ? were widely popular for more than 10 years.
Orion faced the risk of bankruptcy because of Tong Yang Cement’s legal management in September 1971, but overcame its crisis and developed and launched ‘Orion Choco Pie’ in 1974 to begin its second leap to further growth. Orion Choco Pie, the chocolate-covered pie, has grown by 100% since its first year and has greatly contributed to Orion’s growth.
Orion has established five local subsidiary companies and 10 overseas offices in China, Russia, Vietnam, etc and is localizing its production for the global market. In 2005, Orion exceed USD 0.1 billion in sales for the first time in overseas market. Such success in global business was possible thanks to the strong global brand called ‘Orion Choco Pie.’ OSI, upon purchasing Pepsi Co.’s shares, made a new spurt and lead POCACHIP and SWINGCHIP to No. 1 selling potato snacks. This marked the beginning of core snack brands’ advancement to global markets.
