The role of the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) was introduced in 2013 at the same time as the single Police Service of Scotland was established.
The Commissioner, who is appointed by Scottish Ministers, is independent of the police and delivers a free and impartial service. The role of the PIRC is to independently investigate incidents involving the police and independently review the way the police handle complaints from the public. Our aim is to secure public confidence in policing in Scotland.
