The Löwendal Foundation was created in 2010, the first objective of Ms. Ariadna Avram, the President and Founder of the institution being to bring to the fore the oeuvre and teaching endeavors of her grandfather, the Romanian painter, scenographer and university professor George Baron Löwendal (1897-1964), a highly creative and much admired Romanian artistic personality. He bequeathed a large and varied collection of his own works (scenographic projects, graphic works and a great number of paintings, as well as numerous and not yet researched and published manuscripts, the latter being able to shed some new lights on the Romanian art milieu of the inter-war and post-war period). If one needs to further underline Löwendal’s creative strive, it should be mentioned that he was also an enthusiastic promoter of the first professional puppet theatre in Romania and, besides, a gifted poet. He expressed himself through his outstanding and versatile artistry from Sankt Petersburg to Bucharest, from Chernivtsi to Timișoara.
The Löwendal Foundation holds in its collection the greatest part of the artist’s manifold works and documents (written by him or being related to his oeuvre), part of this corpus being displayed in the exhibition spaces of the Foundation, whilst the rest is preserved in its archives.
