Balkan Heritage Foundation (BHF) is a Bulgarian non-governmental and cultural organization established in 2008 as a non-profit entity in public benefit. Its mission is to support the protection, study and communication of the cultural heritage in the Balkans and adjacent regions as well as to enhance its utilization and management.
Since its founding the BHF has been conducting and/or supporting hundreds of research, conservation, education, management, communication and advocacy projects such as archaeological excavations, conservation of artifacts and sites, field schools, training, public lectures, management plans for heritage sites, exhibitions, fundraising, advocacy and volunteer campaigns, publications etc. The pillar of success for the BHF’s activity is the lasting worldwide collaboration with universities, museums, research institutes, municipalities, media, businesses, other organizations and individuals: specialists, students and donors.
The BHF’s vision is to maintain and grow a platform for solidarity to the benefit of the cultural heritage of Southeastern Europe, with the active participation of a wide range of stakeholders from all over the world. Besides Bulgaria the Foundation has been conducting projects in Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Israel.
The Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) is the oldest program of the BHF providing education and training in the fields of archaeology, heritage conservation/ historic preservation and art history.
