SAVTE (Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English) is a charity dedicated to transforming lives through English Language learning and community support. Our work aims to fill the crucial gaps left by mainstream provision, providing urgent functional English language learning, Information, advice and guidance (IAG), and support, enabling people facing barriers to access mainstream services and gain the confidence and skills needed for active citizenship. Our beneficiaries include learners, volunteers, Sheffield communities, and the local voluntary sector.
We have a holistic, bespoke delivery model designed to address the unique needs of individuals. With initial referrals from partners and frontline voluntary services like the Sheffield Project for Refugee Integration and Growth (SPRING), we assess the needs of each learner, their English language level, aspirations, access to IT /digital skills, and personal circumstances. Individual learning plans are developed, providing tailored, regularly reviewed plans for each person's progress.
Our multi-faceted approach includes 1:1 support, small group sessions, online learning, conversation groups, formal classes, and specialist sessions aimed at various learner groups. Integral to this model is our Information, Advice, and Guidance work, complemented by resources such as 'Welcome to Sheffield', ensuring our learners can access other essential services and fully engage with society.
