Playwrights Project is nonprofit arts education empowering people of all ages an backgrounds to voice stories through theatre, inspiring individual growth and creating meaningful community connections.
Based in San Diego, Playwrights Project reaches up to 10,000 people each year in its playwriting programs and productions. Writing programs primarily serve youth in San Diego schools and underserved populations of all ages, including those who have experienced poverty, homelessness, foster care, immigration, substance use disorder, the justice system, and the military.
Highlights:
Since 1985, Playwrights Project has:
• Taught playwriting programs for thousands of students in grades 3-12;
• Produced an annual theatre festival for 37 years serving over 50,000;
• Taught rehabilitative playwriting programs at 4 correctional facilities and 5 reentry sites through our Out of the Yard program;
• Partnered with 80+ schools each year in 28 districts in the County;
• Provided the majority of our programs to underserved populations, including English Language Learners, students with special needs, foster youth, justice involved youth, and pregnant minors – improving writing and communication skills, while supporting social emotional learning and communicating experiences and needs to the public; and
• Engaged over 120 working artists each year in theatre and teaching jobs.
