Between 2020 & 2030, global offshore wind is forecast to grow by a factor of 8 and by 2050 by a factor of 48 to reach 1,400GW.
This means that on average we will need to install 46GW a year between 2020 and 2050 to meet a 1,400GW target. However, forecasts show that global annual demand for rare earth magnets will exceed demand by 2030, leading to shortages if additional supply isn’t developed.
Meeting forecast growth will require a production increase of 15% per annum - equivalent to opening a new mine the size of California’s Mountain Pass every year or one the size of Batou in China (the world’s largest rare earth mine) every three years.
Offshore wind will become the BIGGEST user of rare earth magnets by 2028 and annual demand will exceed total global production by 2035. Offshore wind is at a crossroads!
