McCarthy Toyota’s existence owes itself to a relationship started between Brian McCarthy and the late Dr Albert Wessels at the time when Albert Wessels first imported Toyota vehicles from Japan during the mid 1960’s. Brian McCarthy agreed to sell Toyota Toyopet light commercial vehicles which were the first contingent of vehicles imported by Albert Wessels when he received the distribution rights for Toyota in South Africa. This led to the establishment of Olympic Motors at 150 Smith Street in Durban and from there the franchise has steadily grown. Relationships between McCarthys and Toyota strengthened further when McCarthys gave up their Motor Assemblies plant in Durban to Toyota South Africa from where Toyota expanded its’ assembly operation into the biggest assembler of new vehicles in South Africa.
