Unique to the practice is the pursuit of an architecture which is imaginatively responsive to site and place, whether an urban project or a rural retreat. We carefully craft buildings which are the result of working directly with leading structural engineers, artisans and craftsmen creating buildings which will remain relevant, sustainable and timeless.
Since we established Foster Lomas Architects in 2005 we have developed a broad palette of work from urban penthouses to rural residential houses within heritage landscape areas, which have led to expertise in developing a uniquely sensitive and innovative approach. For example, Sartfell Restorative Rural Retreat has won a medley of awards and situated our work within a genre of architectural excellence of buildings which sit lightly on the landscape. Rigorous research coupled with an emotional resonance with place means that each project embeds itself with the contextual environment. This has enabled us to become experts in achieving planning permission in sites designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty in the UK as well as develop a portfolio of international projects each responding to the specific climatic conditions. The scale of projects undertaken shifts effortlessly from individual residences to international cultural projects.
Our project team at Foster Lomas have trained in many disciplines with the partners Will and Greg building their early careers around skilled craftsmanship, Will working closely with professional metal workers and Greg designing specialised lighting. This experience is applied to meticulous project detailing and connectedness to materials, which pushes the uses of materials to create buildings which both surprise and delight in their artfulness.
