Out For Space Feat. Karuun®

out for space is a team of interdisciplinary professionals who combine research and aesthetics to create a whole new way of developing and producing sustainable products. Inspired by the nature, traditional crafts and new technologies, out for space sets new standards in manufacturing sustainable materials and innovative products. Unique concepts emanate from the desire and vision to revolutionize products and materials from tropical rainforests of Asia, to Allgäu, the region out for space GmbH originates from. Our current project is karuun®. karuun® – natural perfection: Using highly energy efficient technology, we transform rattan’s natural structure into a material which is both versatile and innovative. We call this new material karuun®. A cross-section of rattan looks like a bundle of tubes. When these tubes, in fact capillaries which give rattan the ability to transport water up to 200 metres, are injected with various fillers, rattan is transformed from a non-timber product with limited use to a versatile material at the forefront of natural alternatives to plastic. karuun® defies classification and unlocks a wealth of innovative applications in areas such as the transportation sector, interior and furniture design, sports industry, interaction design, and consumer goods. out for space has already attracted several wellknown companies to work on custom material development projects. The karuun® product family: Processing karuun® rods into blocks opens the door to a multitude of new applications which harness the material’s natural flexibility and light weight. The homogeneous structure of the fibre is unique, and depending on the direction it is cut, three different karuun® products each with various possibilities are created.
