Overview:
hmv Ireland and Xtra-vision are two of Ireland’s most iconic brands and are leading providers of film, games, music, tech and merchandise. hmv Ireland and Xtra-vision are owned by Hilco Capital Ireland. Since Hilco Capital Ireland took over ownership in 2013, hmv and Xtra-vision have expanded steadily as an integrated business and now have a total of 92 stores operating across Ireland; 9 hmv, 50 dual-branded hmv and Xtra-vision, 33 Xtra-vision stores plus 100 Xtra-vision Xpress machines found in SuperValu / Centra and a rapidly growing online e-commerce business.
hmv – the home of entertainment – is the chief specialist retailer of music, film, games, tech and merchandise. The brand is synonymous with the very history and development of popular music and culture, and made famous by the iconic image of Nipper the dog. hmv's rich heritage spans nearly a century, with the grand opening of our first store in London in 1921. Since that time, hmv has evolved considerably, and today they stock all the latest music (vinyl and CDs), films (DVD and Blu-ray), games (Xbox and PlayStation) and electronics (headphones, earphones, tablets, speakers, players and turntables). The nine hmv stores in Ireland are located in Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Belfast, Ballymena and Newry.
Founded in 1979, the Xtra-vision brand became so well-known and respected in Ireland that when US giants Blockbuster bought the company in 1996 they decided not to re-brand it, like they did in the UK. To this day, Xtra-vision is still the foremost provider in rental/retail of film and games, as well as having a growing presence in music, mobile telephony, consumer electronics and confectionary. They stock both DVD and Blu-ray, along with the latest games for Xbox and PlayStation. Through the dual-branded hmv and Xtra-vision stores, Xtra-vision now also deals in music (CDs and vinyl) and electronics (headphones, earphones, tablets, speakers, players and turntables).
