Founded in 2011, York Academy has grown to educate over 950 diverse students in kindergarten through 12th grade via the challenging, world-class International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. We are located in the beautifully revitalized heart of Downtown York.
The Academy is a nonprofit public school that is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban School Districts. Students from eight other districts are also represented. There is no tuition fee to attend the York Academy, which makes us a unique alternative for families seeking a small school community with challenging academics and comprehensive art, music and design/engineering programming.
York Academy is the only school in York County – and one of just four in the state - authorized to offer both the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. We are currently pursuing accreditation for the intense Diploma Programme, which will allow students in eleventh and twelfth grade to take college-level coursework in our classrooms, obtain credits and meet IB requirements.
Students in kindergarten through seventh grade attend our Lower School in the pre-Civil War Smyser-Royer building. In August 2018, we welcomed eighth and ninth graders to the progressive Upper School, located at the site of the former Pennsupreme building. Each year, we will continue to add a grade level until we reach full implementation as a K-12 institution. The first class of York Academy seniors is expected to graduate in 2022.
