Western Engineering Concrete Canoe Association (WECCA) is group of very dedicated students who work to design, build, and race a concrete canoe.
Each year, WECCA competes at the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition (CNCCC) against both Canadian and International Schools. There are various specialized teams within the group focused on the following tasks:
- Design and Analysis: Using CAD software to design the canoe shape and test various cross-sections
- Mould and Construction: Creating a mould and optimizing the curing and casting process of the concrete canoe
- Concrete: Developing an optimal concrete mix that meets competition criteria
- Theme: Making an informative and creative display to showcase development of the concrete canoe
- Technical Report and Presentation: Documenting design and construction process and creating a technical design report and presentation
- Paddling: Training team members to race the concrete canoe
At the 2023 National Competition hosted in London, ON, WECCA placed in the top half of competitors. The club made large strides winning the competition's Most Improved Team and finishing 3rd Place in the Oral Presentation Category. The club is continuously working to improve its canoe design and performance at competition to achieve even greater future success.
