Waister is a company based on the idea of transforming wet food waste and food scraps into a reusable product – From wet waste to pure energy.
For supermarkets, restaurants and commercial kitchens, wet food waste is costly, it causes smell, spills and can attract insects and rodents.
Logistics related to wet waste handling is intensive. Frequent collection and the use of specialized trucks are two issues. Handling a waste fraction that smells is an issue in itself.
Today wet waste is in most cases dumped in landfills, which represents both a waste of resources as well as a source of greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately landfill bans for organic waste is introduced in more and more countries. Waste to energy plants are usually seen as a means to regain the energy, but wet food waste has a relatively low calorific value. To achieve a true circular economy related to wet food waste, the energy could be recovered by extracting the biogas, and then finally use the digestate as fertilizer or soil amendment.
Our solution, waister, will reduce cost and turn wet waste handling into a clean and dry process. This in turn allows for a simplified and cost efficient logistics operation. The reusable product from waister has a calorific value of about 70% related to coal. The biogas potential is high, and nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen are preserved in the process.
