Sesa Goa Iron Ore, a division of Vedanta Limited is India’s largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the private sector. The company is engaged in iron ore mining, pig iron production, met coke production, cement production, power and operating out of two countries, India and Liberia. In India, the operations are spread across 5 states of Goa, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha. Sesa was founded in 1954, as Scambi Economici SA Goa and since then, it has grown to be one among the top low-cost producers of iron ore in the country.
During 1991-1995, it diversified into the manufacture of pig iron and metallurgical coke. Its ‘Value Added Business’ is the largest merchant pig iron manufacturer in India with the capacity of 0.8 MTPA and, generates clean and green energy through two waste heat recovery power plants using waste heat from BFG (Blast Furnace Gas) & COFG (Coke Oven Flue Gas). It has also developed indigenous and environment-friendly technology for producing high quality metallurgical coke.
Sesa Goa is a pioneer in sustainable mining practices with a rich legacy of successful reclamation and rehabilitation of one of the largest open cast iron ore mine in Goa. Through various community development initiatives such as Sesa Technical School, Sesa Football Academy, Sesa Goa has benefitted millions of beneficiaries across the nation.
