• Centre of Sustainable Livelihoods – focusing on poverty reduction, household food security and malnutrition in Africa.
• Centre for Alternative Energy – The TELKOM Centre of Excellence focuses on the telecommunications industry.
• Innovative Product Development and Advanced Manufacturing Technology – research on products and procedures that increase efficiency in industrial product development.
• Materials and Minerals Technology – focusing on the engineering applications and science of minerals.
• Plant Molecular Genetics / Biotechnology – centering on plant genetics, diversity, agricultural productivity, rural development and conservation.
