The Local Health Unit of Matosinhos is a Corporate Public Entity, integrated in the National Health Service, which provides primary, hospital, and long-term health care.
It was the first Local Health Unit to be established in Portugal in 1999, and its vision is the excellence of the integrated health care provided to its patients, based on principles of humanity, cooperation, and innovation.
The philosophy of ULSM is to put the users at the centre of the system, to identify their health needs, and to meet them, strengthening the bonds of trust over its life cycle.
The ULSM comprises the Hospital Pedro Hispano, the grouping of Matosinhos Health Centres and the Convalescence Unit. Its direct area of influence is the municipality of Matosinhos, with a population of approximately 175,000 inhabitants, spread over about 63 km2.
The Local Health Unit of Matosinhos, EPE, is the first Unit certified according to the standard ISO 9001:2008 encompassing all the services provided by the Hospital Pedro Hispano, the Convalescence Unit, and the units included in the grouping of Matosinhos Health Centres.
